I was able to present a poster of my research at the 2016 Consortium of Universities for Global Health Annual Meeting held in San Francisco. I had spent a summer in the Philippines between MS1 and MS2 year doing research with Dr. Veldkamp and his colleague Dr. Belizario in the University of the Philippines, Manila. Our project involved determining the factors that contribute to acceptability of mass drug administration for pre-school children in rural areas of the Philippines.
From this research, I drafted an abstract to present at the CUGH annual meeting. I was able to attend this 3-day conference and present my research poster thanks to help with funding from MAA. They had talks about interesting global health topics including the need for women in global surgery, gun and drug violence, the refugee crisis, pollution, and disaster relief. I spent the weekend attending meetings, listening to talks, and seeing research projects done by people from multiple countries around the world.
In addition to the academic portion of my trip, I was also able to enjoy the city of San Francisco for a few days. I was training for a marathon at the time, so was able to do a gorgeous long run all along the bay, through Golden Gate Park and down Haight-Ashbury, doing quite a bit of sightseeing along the way. I met up with friends I had not seen in years, and ate LOTS of West Coast food. It was a great time and would not have been possible without the travel support of the MAA and Pitt Med Alumni.
If you would like to hear from Eva directly or any of our students, please call the MAA at 412-648-9090 to learn how you can continue to be involved.
